Excavation in Orkney

News reaches us of the start of a season of excavation at St Ola, Smerquoy. Among those involved is Prof Colin Richards of the University of Manchester. The site has been known about for some time, but this represents the first full-scale excavation of the site. Already there looks to be a number of really interesting finds, including what appears to be a structure – what some would call a house – and part of a polished mace-head.
